Bride's Parents speech

There once was a young girl from Brockville
Whose parents thought she was a thrill
Ever since she was two,
She planned what to do,
Looking forward she climbs each new hill.

With her dad this young woman does balk
While with her mom she does constantly talk
Now you might say we fussed,
For as parents we must,
To see the Lord teach her to walk.

On this journey we have gone round some bends
We would stand and not fall to the trends
As a fam'ly of three
It was her, you and me
And together we stayed as dear friends.

Then one day as she walked through the door
We knew our trio would now become four
So to this one we raise
A hearty cheer of praise
And look forward to life even more.

So now we just want to say
A welcome to you all today
You mean much to this couple
To them you're no trouble
And these empty nesters say "Hooray!"

I wrote the first line while Andrew & I were out for a walk--then while I was making breakfast, Andrew got inspired & wrote the rest. We read this at our daughter's wedding reception yesterday.

Countdown to the Wedding

Cards coming back along with RSVPs online
Ordering a menu with the caterer
Unpacking a dress to be steamed
New details off the checklist
Trip to the airport to get a friend
Delivered to us from Calgary for the week
Ongoing, the clock keeps moving forward
With sightseeing jaunts to introduce the
Newcomer to life in Ontario
Texting details to many alternates with
Organizing tiny white lights and paper hearts
Time on the beach with peach pie
Help protect the
Emotions on the verge of brimming over
Week coming close to a new beginning
Each day brings us toward the joining of two into a new one
Dilemmas are
Diverted
Interest is high as we prepare for bride and groom's
Next excitement of
Getting to the church on time

Thunderstorm

The flash of lightning explodes night
I wake to the sudden pounding rain
Crash of thunder answering light

Sleep becomes elusive taking flight
Thoughts have time to awaken the brain
The flash of lightning explodes night

Memories and the desire for sleep fight
Interacting with thought in vain
Crash of thunder answering light

Plans emerging bringing smile inspite
Desire for sleep does remain
The flash of lightning explodes night

The clock shows past midnight
Thoughts go round and round again
Crash of thunder answering light

The weather brings growth and delight
Even as sleep evades the strain
The flash of lightning explodes night
Crash of thunder answering light

Heart

Blue foam heart set down
On the desk where I go to
Write--whether poems
Or mysteries--reminder
To follow my heart always.

Faith

A long walk alone
Is never without You, Lord
If a country road
Or a city street downtown
Brisk with people--You are there.

Workshop for One

Tick, tock, tick, tock, tick
The clicks sound from my desk clock
As I work today
Writing a poem during
My writing workshop for one.

Visitor

A neighbour's cat coming
To watch the bird's nest
Hoping breakfast will be forthcoming
A neighbour's cat coming
Anticipating a tasty meal upcoming
While perched on our car at rest
A neighbour's cat coming
To watch the bird's nest

(The poems published on this day were written from June 5 to June 20. My own personal poetry workshop as I begin to learn to be a poet. Many thanks to Avis Harley whose ABC books are the basis for this new endeavour.)

Bench

A weathered bench waiting
For someone alive to sing songs of love
Birds fresh joy never outdating
A weathered bench waiting
For actors animating
The shelter soaring above
A weathered bench waiting
For someone alive to sing songs of love

Picnic

Father's Day we go to church
With Mom and Dad
Before we go out
To 3M park.

Races to wheelbarrow
Soccor to kick
Water to explode
Sunshine to absorb.

Salads to decide upon
Hamburgers to dress
Desserts to sample
Water to drink.

Playground for all ages
Fun with Dad
All on Father's Day
At 3M park.

Green Curtain

Spring covers bare branches
With buds
Sap dripping onto the car
Tiny flowers bursting out
Yellow green
Pushed off in a few days
By the emerging leaves

Summer approaches
The green curtain shutters
My front window
Separates me from my neighbours
A piece of country inside the city
Privacy
Protection from the heat of summer
Shade for my reading bench
Home for racing squirrels

Late autumn it falls away
The yellow leaves
Are found by the wind
Scattered to bury the garden
Whistled up the street

The chill of winter approaches
The curtain is gone
My Front window
Looks at houses now

Me

There once was a girl from Whitby
Who went to university
Introduced to hummus
With a boy who'd percuss
Israeli food of chick peas and tahini

Burma (Someday)

To a land of mystery and beauty
One, two, three travel with me

Travel on the elephant amazing to see
Through the jungles, ride with me

Soldiers to avoid--military tyranny--
On the way to the village and tea with me

Elephant, python, tiger, monkey
Amazing creatures to see with me

Lotus flowers gathered to be
Woven into silk to be worn by me

Mountain hilltribes and lowland farmers be
The people of the country at peace with me

Making a Pie

Rebekah is my pie maker
Working hard with lard, flour, sugar and fruit
Rhubarb season is the reason for pie
Bitter and tangy--with custard or without
It is made, eaten and allowed to fade
Into memories--unless we can freeze some,
Mother, for another day.

Early Morning

She woke early for her walk
And stepped out to hear crows squawk

The sparrows had set to talk
While cats had begun to stalk

Black-eyed susans on a stock
Seemed to watch the soaring hawk

Dad

Tag along with him
Car rides, shopping, hanging out
List'ning while he talks

Mom

Encouraged to trust
Path will be found--confidence
All in note of love

Blue & Green

The sky, the water
Together balance the earth
My serenity

Blue House

Our little blue home
Vi'let receded behind
Green curtain shelt'ring

Poppy

Intense bold orange
Standing straight among the green
Summer is announced

Cat

Cat walks in the light
Padding through the neighbourhood
On the hunt for squirrels

Father (Andrew)

Father--full quiver
One arrow only--daughter
Ready to send forth

Pastor

Preacher ready now
Expound ways for abundance
With an audience

For Andrew

Side by side life twined
One before God and with God
A journey of love

Poppies

Orange pops out
From the surrounding green
Poppies big bold in a silent
